Argentina goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman has revealed Lionel Messi feels under pressure to play as well for the national team as he does for Barcelona.

Guzman made the comments in an interview with Super Deportivo Radio in Argentina as the national team begin preparations for this year’s Copa America.

The goalkeeper, who was called up the 2018 World Cup but has not made the cut for the Copa America, was asked about Messi and said: “I would advise Leo to enjoy it, I always tell him. Often, arriving in Argentina with the national team creates those demands, and I think Leo is one of the those who feel it the most.”

“He feels he has to perform like he does with Barcelona. Why does it have to be like that? I think he has to enjoy the moment, maybe it makes it more difficult for him. My only advice is to enjoy it and be himself at all times, with the humility that characterises him.”

Guzman, 33, who plays for Mexican top-flight side Tigres UANL added that Messi “deals with the dressing room with an individual approach” adding that former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has the one who “generally raised his voice”.

Messi will be looking to put a disappointing end to his club season, with the Champions League capitulation against Liverpool and loss to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final, behind him as he seeks to win silverware with his national team for the first time at the Copa del Rey.

Argentina start their campaign against Colombia on 16th June before taking on Paraguay and Qatar in the group stage.
