An Israeli startup company has unveiled an AI robot ‘lifeguard’ that can detect drownings in swimming pools and alert all household members on their phones.

The nifty robot was created by Coral Detection Systems, based in the coastal town of Binyamina-Giv’at Ada in the northern Israeli district of Haifa, and it was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in the US.

The startup company, which employs five people, has developed artificial intelligence technology that monitors home pools to detect a possible drowning the moment it takes place.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 150 children fatally drowned in pools and spas in the United States between the end of May and early September 2019.

In Israel, child drowning rates have become so concerning that a programme called ‘Don’t Take Your Eyes Off Your Children’ was launched by the ministries of Health, Education, Welfare and the National Road Safety Authority to combat the issue.

Founded in 2016, Coral Detection Systems has developed a system which continually monitors home pools with AI and a built-in underwater video camera.

Coral co-founder and CEO Eyal Golan said the device is programmed to monitor the number of people in the water as well as their position and motion.

If the device detects something, it sounds an alarm and simultaneously sends alerts to the phones of all family members.

It is also solar-powered and operates 24 hours a day.

The company began selling the device in Israel in late 2018 and plans are in place to start marketing it internationally.
