Germany’s panda duo have made their debut before the public when they ventured outside for the first time to the delight of zoo visitors.

Nicknamed Pit and Paule by their keepers, the panda twins have quickly become the star attractions at the zoo in the German capital Berlin, and zoo visitors who turned up especially for the first glimpse of the pair were not disappointed as they played in their enclosure.

The zoo even put on extra ticket booths in order to deal with the crowds.

Keepers made special arrangements to make it safe for the cubs that are now five months old which included removing water bowls where they might have drowned and anything else deemed unsafe.

The first venture into the public view was carried out under the careful eye of their mother Meng Meng who would stop them from climbing too high every time it seemed too dangerous.

Their real names are Meng Xiang und Meng Yuan and they are the first pandas ever to be born in Germany after their parents were loaned to the zoo from China.

Previously they spent most of the time in their indoor enclosure and zoo director Andreas Knieriem noted: “They are healthy, curious and follow their mother. They are more than ready for their first outing.”
