More than 1,600 Chinese doctors and nurses have returned to Shanghai after claiming ‘victory’ over COVID-19 in Wuhan and they are now being treated to a free 14 days of steak and lobster in quarantine.

The last of Shanghai’s so-called ‘Hubei volunteers’ – 1,649 health workers dispatched to the central Chinese province – returned to the coastal port city yesterday (31st March).

China Eastern Airlines returned 759 medics, all of whom are now in two weeks of quarantine before they can return to their families.

Among them are volunteers from Shanghai’s Jinshan District, comprising 21 doctors and nurses from local health facilities who had spent 68 days assisting Wuhan’s Jinyintan Hospital.

Quarantine hotels were allocated in the town of Zhujiajiao, on the outskirts of the municipality, but returning medics are being treated to 14 days of luxury in private hotel rooms and specially prepared bento boxes curated by 10 Chinese hotel head chefs.

According to a 14-day meal plan provided by Shanghai tourism and hospitality company Jinjiang International, health workers are being offered steak, lobster, sea cucumber, seared scallop, salmon, stir-fried shrimp, braised pork and Iberian ham.

The menu also shows fresh fruit platters which change daily for the 1,649 health workers quarantining in six hotels.

Medics who had arrived from across the country to assist in Hubei Province are returning to similar rewards for their volunteer work, which the Chinese government said successfully suppressed the spread of the coronavirus in two months.

On 29th March, Wuhan’s 1,500-bed Leishenshan Hospital, which was built out of prefabricated materials in a matter of days, held a celebration marking the end of its mission and declared ‘victory’ over COVID-19 in the virus-hit province.
