This is the moment a reckless cyclist attempts to ride towards the huge waves crashing against the rocks before being swept off the path while the coastal area was on a weather alert.
The incident was filmed at Punta Herminia in the city of A Coruna in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia and the footage was shared on Twitter by netizen ‘Martinboizan’ where it has been viewed over 60,000 times.
In the footage, the biker is seen cycling towards the huge waves on a path as they crash against the rocks.
An enormous wave promptly envelopes him and after it clears, the young man is seen picking up his bike after apparently being swept off the path onto the adjacent rocks.
According to reports, the area was placed on orange alert at the time of the incident due to the bad weather conditions.
The Civil Protection authority criticised the unnamed cyclist’s behaviour and reminded residents not to approach the cliffs or go near the coast when a weather alert has been issued.
The mayor of A Coruna, Ines Rey, said: “This is a great example of what you should not do when the coast is place on orange alert.”
According to local media, this kind of reckless behaviour can be punished with a 200 EUR (171 GBP) fine.
Netizen ‘EduardoNaya’ commented: “Irresponsibility, ignorance, stupidity – a dangerous cocktail. This moron not only placed his own life at risk, but also those who potentially had to rescue him.”
‘Fmoran67’ said: “When people like that are safe from trouble, they should be made to wear a bracelet for life with the message ‘next time I will be rescued by my mum’.”
