This is the moment around a hundred mariachi musicians serenade caregivers outside a Mexican health clinic to pay tribute to their frontline work battling COVID-19.

The mariachi band performed a tribute show outside the IMSS Clinic 6 in the city of San Nicolas de los Garza in the north-eastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

The group performed a number of popular songs to honour the clinic’s doctors and nurses working around the clock to treat COVID-19 patients, according to reports.

The performance was reportedly organised by a group of local businesses.

In the footage shared on social media, it shows dozens of singers and musicians performing outside the clinic with guitars, violins and other instruments.

Mariachi is a genre of Mexican music that dates back to at least the 18th century, evolving over time in rural areas of western Mexico.

A typical mariachi group today consists of as many as eight violins, two trumpets and at least one guitar, including a high-pitched vihuela and an acoustic bass guitar called a ‘guitarron’. All players take turns singing lead and backup vocals.

Reports said medical staff members at the clinic were moved by the gesture.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has registered 26,025 cases of COVID-19 and 2,507 related deaths.
