This 20-year-old man died seconds after stepping out of his house to head off to work when a couple that decided they did not want to walk shot him in the head in order to steal his motorbike.

The tragic incident happened in the city of Jose C. Paz in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires last weekend.

There are conflicting reports on the exact date of the murder as some local source say it happened in the early hours of Saturday (13 March) while others say it was Sunday (14 March).

The victim was identified as Yair Alan Nahuel Nunez who was a volunteer at the Argentine army and was on his way to work during the fatal encounter.

Local media said Nunez had just walked out of his house and was about to climb on his motorbike when he was approached by an armed man and a woman who decided to steal his bike rather than walk.

However, Nunez refused to give up his bike which led to a struggle that ended tragically when the gunman shot the victim in the head.

The suspects, who were reportedly a couple, then fled the scene on foot leaving the bike behind as neighbours went to the street to see what had happened.

Nunez was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a few hours after the incident.

The suspects arrested were identified as Damian and Veronica Florencia who were detained shortly after the fatal mugging attempt but there were no reports on the investigation details leading to their arrest.

Veronica Florencia was found to have a gunshot wound on her right shoulder which is believed to have happened during the struggle between Nunez and the gunman.

The police also found the couple in possession of a 9mm Beretta which is suspected of being the murder weapon.

The case is being handled by the Investigation Functional Unit (UFI) number 20 in the partido of San Martin as the suspects are investigated for a murder charge and illegal possession of a weapon.
