This is the moment a daredevil wakeboards down a flooded motorway during a storm as lightning flashes behind him.

Mike Milenin hitched his tow rope to the back of a car at night to wakeboard through a major road in Russia’s second city of St Petersburg.

And, although the water was only a few inches deep, the professional wakeboarder still managed to show off some twists and turns.

Mike later shared the clip – which he jokingly titled ‘When you’re late for the Metro’ – with his 2,000 followers on Instagram.

It was filmed on the R21 motorway, also known as the Kola Motorway, a major route in Russia which runs all of the way from St Petersburg to the Arctic city of Murmansk.

Impressed netizen ‘a_lexus78’ commented: “I now have an obsession”, ‘ira_wake’ said: “Hahahah, original”, while ‘riverwakeclub’ added: “Wow! Surfers do not surrender!”

The video was reportedly shot to advertise a wakeboarding shop and to promote an extreme sports channel.

It was filmed after a storm when 2.2 centimetres (0.9 inches) of rain fell in just 20 minutes and storm drains were unable to cope with the volume of water.

Wakeboarding is a water sport in which a rider is normally towed across open water behind a motorboat, cutting across its wake to perform aerial manoeuvres.

St Petersburg is Russia’s second biggest city after Moscow and is regarded as the country’s cultural capital. It is the world’s most northerly major city.
