A man has snatched his four-year-old son from his ex-wife and taken him to a secluded spot where he set fire to his car with both of them inside to ‘avenge’ the couple’s divorce.

The authorities in the Russian-administered Crimea launched a criminal case into 43-year-old Edem Devletov from the city of Alushta for charges including attempted murder of a minor.

The case was reported by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on Wednesday, 13th October.

According to the authorities, Devletov forcibly took his unnamed son from his ex-wife, Edie Devletova, age not disclosed, whose care he was under, and drove him to a lake near the village of Luchistoye on Wednesday, 6th October.

While the two were sat in the man’s VAZ compact sedan car, he set fire to the vehicle, burning both himself and his son.

The two were taken to hospital, where, at the time of reporting, the boy was being treated for burns to his limbs and his face covering 13 percent of his body.

His condition was reported to be stable, and his life was not at risk. At the time of reporting, his father, whose injuries were not described, also remained in hospital under police guard.

The police seized a gas canister from the charred vehicle as part of their investigation into the alleged crime, and officers were also questioning family members.

According to the news outlet Life, the woman said her ex carried out the alleged crime to ‘avenge’ their divorce. The couple had been together for five years before splitting.

According to the woman, who is pregnant, the man regularly blackmailed and threatened her and he also often beat and insulted her when they were a couple.

She said she had previously contacted the authorities over her alleged mistreatment at his hands, but to no avail.

The woman said her ex almost killed their eldest son in January this year after he threatened to throw himself off a cliff with the child and pass it off as a drink-driving accident.

She reported the threat to the police at the time, but she subsequently withdrew her statement after he allegedly threatened her baby.

The investigation continues.
