A man has accidentally shot and killed his friend after they decided to go hunting without high-vis vests as the activity is banned on the Greek mountain.

The incident took place in a forested area on Pelion Mountain in the northern Greek region of Thessaly, on 19th November.

According to national newspaper On Larissa, the 33-year-old suspect of Albanian descent went hunting on the mountain with a 57-year-old friend, names not disclosed.

The pair reportedly decided not to wear high-vis jackets to avoid calling attention to themselves as hunting is currently prohibited in the area, and the younger man was staying in the country with an expired permit.

According to On Larissa, it was about 1 pm when the men were walking through the forest when the older man sensed a movement in front of him which he thought was a wild boar and fired.

However, the bullet hit his friend, who reportedly died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

The 33-year-old victim was married with two children and a third on the way.

The suspected shooter has been detained and sent for processing by the public prosecutor’s office.

The investigation continues.
