A trial has started against a Bosnian man who moved to start a new life with his wife in Germany and allegedly killed her and dumped her body in a pond when she told him she wanted to leave him because of his violent beatings.

Nermin Salkic, 35, from the German town of Obertshausen, has gone on trial for murder at the Darmstadt Regional Court after he allegedly killed his 28-year-old wife Nadira Salkic on 23rd November 2020.

Local media reported that the Bosnian native lived together with his wife and two children, Sedin aged seven and Nejla aged two, in an apartment building in the German state of Hesse for two years before the incident happened.

According to witnesses, their marriage was anything but peaceful, as Nermin was psychologically and physically mistreating Nadira and had even threatened to kill her if she ever left him.

Sickened by his constant attacks, Nadira asked him for a divorce shortly before she was murdered, but Nermin who her relatives described as ‘delusional’ refused to accept it.

Struggling to accept the demand, Nermin allegedly decided to take things into his own hands after yet another row and punched her five times in the head before strangling her to death.

He then decided to throw her lifeless body into a nearby pond, and tried to convince police investigators that his wife had left him and the children, despite him being exceptionally loving and caring towards her.

Investigators found his story very unconvincing and questioned the family’s acquaintances and neighbours who informed them about the martial problems and Nermin’s temper issues.

Nadira’s severely damaged corpse was found the next morning, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) away from their home in a pond in the town of Rodgau in Offenbach district.

The police reported that she was found with “significant head injuries” as her skull was cracked in several places and concluded she was a victim of violence, after which Nermin was arrested and charged with murder by the public prosecutor.

During the trial at the Darmstadt Regional Court on Tuesday (24th August), evidence revealed that the 35-year-old man put his heavily bleeding wife in the car and drove to the local recreation area where he tossed her into a pond, with her head and upper body underwater.

The judges concluded that she must have died in extreme agony, which is yet to be confirmed by a total of 30 witnesses and four experts listed by judge Wagner.

Nermin made no statements during the trial.

According to local media, the custody of the children was given to the victim’s parents and brother who live in the town of Lukavac in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The trial continues.
