A man has become a millionaire after he let his phone pick random numbers for his lottery ticket.

Man Nguyen from Annandale, in Fairfax County, in the US state of Virginia, was reportedly missing just one Mega Ball number to win the lottery’s Mega Millions USD 145 million (GBP 118 million) jackpot.

But he still became a millionaire after he noticed the online lottery app on his mobile phone one day and decided to give it a try.

Nguyen then reportedly bought several tickets and let the app choose numbers on its own through the system’s Easy Pick option.

But he was shocked when one of the tickets matched numbers 14, 16, 40, 52, and 59 in the drawing on Tuesday, 28th February 2023.

He was reportedly missing just one lucky number, 13, to win the USD 145 million (GBP 118 million) jackpot.

Nguyen revealed how he would like to spend a part of his winnings and said in a statement obtained by Newsflash from the Virginia Lottery on Tuesday, 21st March: “My wife’s birthday is coming up, and I’m thinking of buying her a new car!”

Virginia Lottery said: “Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11pm.

“The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 12,607,306.

“The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.

“All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia.

“Mr Nguyen lives in Fairfax County, which received nearly USD 48.7 million [GBP 39.6 million] in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.

“In Fiscal Year 2022, the Lottery raised more than USD 779 million [GBP 634 million] for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.”

The lottery offers a number of games online including Mega Millions, Powerball, Cash4Life, Cash 5 with EZ Match, Pick 4 and Pick 3 tickets online, along with dozens of instant plays.

They concluded by saying: “With all gaming, please play responsibly.”
