A 28-year-old man is on trial for killing his eight-month-pregnant girlfriend because he did not want his new love to know he had fathered a child with another woman.

According to local media, Henry Alberto Salazar Burgos is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Lilian Beatriz Mendez Ramirez, 26, because he wanted to hide the pregnancy.

The victim’s body was found between the municipalities of Olocuilta and Miramar in the department of La Paz in southern El Salvador.

According to a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, the suspect met Mendez Ramirez on 20th October 2017 and drove her out of the capital San Salvador.

Then he allegedly killed her and dumped the body before driving back to the capital city, according to reports.

Local media said the suspect wanted Mendez Ramirez to undergo an abortion despite being eight months pregnant and when she refused, he killed her.

Prosecutor Douglas Melendez told local media: “The man (Salazar Burgos) did not want his girlfriend to know so that is why they travelled by car when he killed her.”

Melendez added: “He strangled her and he dumped the body between Olocuilta and Miramar.”

Reports said the suspect was arrested on 29th May 2018.

During the ongoing trial, prosecutors reportedly provided evidence that the defendant drove to the location where the victim’s body was found.

Local media said the prosecution team has also summoned the victim’s friends, relations and colleagues as well as the police officer who found the body.

An expert who studied the area’s CCTV footage, which shows the murder, will also testify, according to reports.

The suspect is reportedly charged with aggravated femicide and forced abortion, as the victim was eight months pregnant at the time, and could face between 50 and 60 years in prison.
