Suspect Perry Hughes allegedly shot his roommate – identified only as Antonio – while celebrating a third roommate’s birthday in Shelby County, in the US state of Tennessee, on the night of Monday, 13th March.

The group apparently wanted to celebrate by drinking and playing dominos.

According to two witnesses who live at the residence, Hughes became intoxicated and picked a fight with Antonio over USD 10 (GBP 8).

The argument quickly turned physical and both men allegedly ended up pointing weapons at each other, according to the police.

Antonio put up his weapon and said he wanted to fight, which was when Hughes reportedly began firing off his gun, allegedly hitting the victim.

Officers with the Memphis Police Department responded to a call at around 5:02 am about a shooting inside the residence.

The two people who approached officers claimed Hughes had shot Antonio multiple times during the heated argument.

Officers reportedly entered the residence and found Hughes “barricaded” in his bedroom.

Police said they were able to talk him out of his room after a short standoff.

As they entered the room, they reportedly found the victim inside a city rubbish bin placed upside down and covered in trash.

Officers who removed Antonio’s body from the bin noted that he had been shot several times.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and could only to pronounce Antonio dead.

Hughes was taken into custody and charged with one count of second-degree murder.

Investigators reportedly observed two handguns in “plain view” inside Hughes’ bedroom.

The floor of the hallway was wet and appeared to have “recently been mopped”, according to the police.

Officers located three guns -two 9 mm pistols and one 22-calibre handgun – inside Hughes’ bedroom, along with what appeared to be a mop and a bucket covered in blood.

Hughes, who reportedly has prior convictions, was booked into the Shelby County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court today, on 17th March.
