A court has sentenced a dad to over 29 years in prison for beating his own seven-year-old son to death with a wooden plank to get revenge on his own mother, who had claimed he was a bad father.

The court in the Brazilian city of Manaus sentenced Rogerio Alexandrino dos Santos to 29 years and four months in prison on Thursday, 15th July for the murder he committed in 2019.

He has been in preventive custody since 17th June 2019, and the time he has already spent in detention will be deducted from his sentence.

On the day of the crime, Rogerio took his son, David Nonato Bento dos Santos, from his mother (the boy’s grandmother) to a discreet location for the killing, telling him they were going to “play a game”.

However, he then beat the youngster several times with a plank of wood until he was dead, and he buried his body in a makeshift grave he had allegedly dug days earlier.

The grandmother, who was raising the youngster, noticed he was missing and called the police.

When the police went to Rogerio’s house to take a statement from him, he confessed to having killed his son and buried him at the scene.

During questioning, he said he committed the crime to get revenge on his own mother, with whom he regularly argued.

He was apparently resentful of the bond between his mother and her grandson, and also the fact that she apparently thought he was not a good enough father to the youngster himself.

David’s biological mother abandoned her son when he was just months old, handing him over to his dad for him to raise.

Rogerio, in turn, then handed the youngster over to his mother, claiming he did not have the means to raise him himself.

It is unclear if the case is now closed or if Rogerio can appeal the sentence.
