A thug has been jailed for beating up his flatmate and knocking out his teeth because the victim asked him to take out the rubbish in their shared home.

The incident happened at Jurong West Street in Singapore City on the island of Singapore.

A court heard how the victim Liu Jia, 35, was making breakfast in the kitchen on 10th March when he noticed a bag of rubbish on top of the stove.

He asked his flatmate, Liu Lei, 36, who he had seen doing dishes earlier if it belonged to him but he denied the claim.

The situation turned sour later when the victim sent a message to the flat WhatsApp group asking who the rubbish belonged to and reminded everybody in the group to dispose of their rubbish properly.

The court heard how the Liu Lei thought that the message was directed at him and decided to confront the victim.

The situation escalated and Liu Lei pushed the victim before punching him twice in the face.

It was only afterwards that the victim realised that his tooth was missing and that he was bleeding from the mouth.

Other flatmates intervened and convinced him not to call police but the victim changed his mind after his attacker refused to apologise of fork out for his medical costs.

The victim underwent dental implant surgery for his missing tooth and incurred 3,535 SGD (2,075 GBP) in medical bills.

Liu Lei pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt.

The prosecutor asked for at least six weeks’ jail and a compensation order to cover the victim’s bills, noting that the victim lost his tooth and was on medical leave for one day.

“This dispute happened over a trivial matter and the accused was the aggressor in this case, because he had confronted the victim over a perceived insult that was not directed at him,” said the prosecution.

Liu Lei was sentenced to five weeks’ jail on Wednesday and told that he will serve an additional week behind bars unless he pays 2,075 GBP in compensation.
