Man Drowns In Cabin After Tugboat Overturns Trying To Tow Fishing Vessel

A man has died in the cabin of a tugboat that overturned while towing a stranded fishing vessel at an Argentine port, as can be seen in this footage.

The incident took place at Puerto Deseado in the southern Argentine province of Santa Cruz.

The Argentine Navy had to intervene when the Gypsi V tugboat, under the Argentine flag, overturned due to an allegedly dangerous manoeuvre while assisting the stranded fishing vessel Xin Shi Ji 26.

The tugboat reportedly drew alongside the fishing boat before turning around and overturning shortly afterwards.

The tugboat operator, identified as Daniel Goro, died after becoming trapped in the cabin. His body was found hours later by divers who began their search after the accident.

His son Cristian and another colleague managed to jump into the sea and were later rescued by the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA).

During the rescue, one navy serviceman reportedly swallowed seawater with spilled fuel and had to be hospitalised, although he is now out of danger.

The PNA is carrying out an investigation to establish what caused the tugboat to capsize.

On Thursday morning, many shops in Puerto Deseado closed as a sign of respect for the death of Goro, who was well known in the town and had extensive experience working at the port.

Local media also reported that the Gipsy V was a historic vessel used to tow deep-draft ships.

The investigation is ongoing.
