These amusing images show a man who called the police to help him dig up his garden after he buried more than 7,000 GBP in cash last year but then could not find it again.

The hapless 65-year-old, whose name has not been given, rang Tailugou Police Station in Zhangbei County, which is in Hebei Province in Central China, on 20th February.

He explained that he had buried 70,000 RMB (7,715 GBP) underground because he does not know how to use banks, but he could not find the cash again when he went looking a few months later.

The officers with shovels spent some three hours digging through his garden before they discovered a tin can containing the pensioner’s life savings.

One of the policemen told local media: “The villager said he put 70,000 RMB in cash in a tin can and buried it in his back garden in autumn last year.

“He then left to work elsewhere. No one else was at home. He returned a few days ago and dug up his garden but couldn’t find the can.

“After he called us, we dug at the same spot for more than two hours but didn’t find anything.

“We considered the possibility that the pensioner had misremembered, so we tried digging off to the side and found it about half a metre away.

“The pensioner has no children and does not know how to use bank cards.

“He often buried his money underground because he felt it was the safest option. But he kept switching burial spots and eventually forgot where his money was.

“We asked whether he trusted us. When he said yes, we took him to the bank and opened a savings account for him.”
