A single man has been driving around the city streets in a converted bumper car because “mobility scooters are silly” and it helps him to meet women.

Henri Wermeskerken has been whizzing through the streets of Groningen in the northern Dutch province of the same name in a brightly-coloured bumper car for the past week.

According to Henri, he drives the bumper car, which is even fitted with a stereo system to play funfair sounds, to make other people laugh as well as to help the single chap meet eligible women.

He told local media that he saw a beautiful lady standing at the bus stop last week and he pulled over to ask: “Do you want a ride in my convertible?”

Henri also drives the funfair vehicle because “I find mobility scooters silly”.

He added: “I have an app with fairground sounds on my phone which I have connected to speakers.”

Henri acquired the bumper car in May and mechanics fitted it with a scooter motor, according to reports.

He said: “It drives at a maximum speed of 18kph (11mph), but the original money slot is still there so if I drop a coin in, it is limited to 10kph (6mph) and even a child can drive it.”

Henri said that he has not got into trouble with the authorities over the vehicles, adding that two police officers even posed with him a few days ago.

He added: “Could you write down that I am single?”
