A German artist has built a small wooden ‘parasite’ house on the roof of a Munich car park to draw attention to the high rents in the city.

The intentional eyesore, part of a project called ‘Penthaus a la Parasit’ (‘Parasite Penthouse’), was constructed by artist Jakob Wirth, 28, and a friend.

The pair built the wooden house to raise awareness of the problem of rent prices in Munich in the southern German state of Bavaria, among the highest in the country.

A series of snaps of the house was posted on the ‘Penthaus a la Parasit’ Instagram page, some accompanied with the message: “Where is the parasite?”

In response to the housing crisis in Munich, Wirth launched the campaign and built the small house on top of a car park in the city centre.

According to local media, Wirth has built similar structures on several roofs in the cities of Berlin and Weimar, although it is unclear whether those structures were intended to draw attention to high rent prices like his latest effort in Munich.

The owners of the car park were unaware of Wirth’s campaign, according to reports.

Wirth said: “Sure it’s cheeky and provocative!”

However, he said that he hopes the car park owners do not dismantle his wooden house any time soon.
