A young man has been arrested for beating up and threatening to kill a 70-year-old woman who just moved into the area because “newcomers annoy” him.

The incident took place in the western Bulgarian capital Sofia when the victim, Nikolina Stefanova, was returning home from shopping.

The 70-year-old woman, who moved into a new flat with her family three months ago, was beaten up by her 24-year-old neighbour who also threatened to kill her, according to local media.

The suspect, identified as Gabriel Ivanov, allegedly attacked her and hit her against a wall, breaking her arm.

The elderly victim told local media: “He told me ‘hey, I am going to kill you now’.”

She also claimed that the young man had threatened her family earlier.

Stefanova said: “He threatened us, saying ‘I will kill you, newcomers annoy me’. It was definitely about us because we are the newcomers. We have lived in this flat for three months.”

Reports said that the elderly woman suffered a broken arm as well as multiple bruises and minor injuries.

She was admitted to hospital while the 24-year-old suspect was detained for 72 hours, according to local media.

The woman claims that she does not know the suspect and did not provoke him in any way.

Meanwhile, the victim’s unnamed daughter said that Ivanov recently tried to break into their home and her children witnessed the alleged incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
