This is the shocking moment security guards at a Russian supermarket pepper spray a customer and then beat him with batons because he refused to open his bag.

The incident, which was filmed and posted online, happened outside a Magnit supermarket on Telman Street in the city of Krasnoyarsk in the Russian Krasnoyarsk Krai region.

Security guards reportedly approached the man while he was still in the shop and asked him to open his bag.

Magnit, which has thousands of stores across Russia, was once the country’s biggest food retailer, and the Magnit customer, in a red jacket, was apparently offended at being asked to have his bag checked.

In the footage he is seen with his phone in his hands reportedly calling the police. He is seen standing on an exit ramp, but one of the guards in a black shirt suddenly climbs up and pepper sprays him in the face after another guard took a swing at him with a baton.

The young man is briefly blinded and tries to run away past the guards, but is grabbed, and then beaten with batons as more guards rush in to restrain him.

Shocked passersby, meanwhile, are seen confronting the security guards and telling them to leave the young man alone, and when he starts calling for help, some of them step in to try and get the guards to leave him alone.

One woman can be heard saying: “You have no right to beat him like this”.

A spokesman for the store said: “The young man was suspected of theft. The security guards asked him open the bag, but he resisted.”

A spokesman for the local police confirmed they were aware of the incident and added: “A check is being conducted which will evaluate the actions of the security officers.”

They also confirmed that the man seen being beaten had filed a complaint for assault.
