A Spanish man has been arrested after his wife plunged from a third-floor window as they were quarantined together during the coronavirus lockdown.
The body of the 56-year-old victim, named in reports as Laura, was found on the street in the Pajarillos neighbourhood in the city of Valladolid in the central Spanish region of Castille and Leon.
She died after plunging from the window of the third-floor flat she lived in and her husband, named in reports as Francisco Javier C., 44, has been arrested.
Local media report neighbours heard the couple arguing intensely in the early hours of the morning.
Local residents then reportedly spotted the victim hanging from the window being held on to be her husband and they rushed to try to place mattresses below her.
Daniel Jimenez, one of the neighbours who tried to help the woman in the incident, told local newspaper El Pais that screams had woken his dog and wife up.
He says he then went out into the street to see the woman hanging from the building.
The suspect was reportedly asking for help and holding on by her hands, with Jimenez and another neighbour taking two mattresses to place below the woman.
The other neighbour was collecting more items to cushion the fall when the woman suddenly fell.
The suspect ran to check on her and Jimenez claimed both the victim and suspect smelt of alcohol.
National police officers and the local police went to the scene but paramedics could do nothing to save the victim’s life.
Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told radio station SER that the incident was a case of gender violence.
The investigation is ongoing and the suspect will appear before a judge to be charged. El Pais report that Emilio Alvarez, Sub-Delegate of the Government in Valladolid, said that the man had been arrested on suspicion of gender violence.
The minister said that woman had not previously reported domestic violence and so was not in the country’s system to support victims of domestic crimes, which is called VioGEN.
If it is determined that it is a case of gender violence, Laura would become the 19th victim of gender violence in Spain this year and the third since the country’s coronavirus lockdown began.
Investigators are looking into several lines of investigation and have not provided further details on the case.
