Man Accidentally Shoots Himself Through Face And Neck With Metal Bar From Homemade Weapon

A married father of five has described himself as a “miracle” after he survived shooting himself through the face and neck with a metal rod from a homemade weapon.

Aldinailson Pereira da Silva, aged 29, accidentally injured himself with the homemade weapon in the town of Monte Alegre in the Brazilian state of Para on Monday, 20th September.

He had been preparing the weapon to go hunting when it went off, shooting an iron rod through his face and neck, of which he later said: “I was sure I was going to die.”

He was taken to hospital in the city of Santarem to undergo surgery in the early hours of the following morning.

Surgeons managed to remove the metal rod, which they revealed was less than one centimetre from his internal carotid artery.

It is unclear if the rod was part of the homemade weapon or if it was the actual projectile itself.

Surgeon Vinicius Savino said: “Had there been a lesion to this artery, he would have died and he wouldn’t have even had a chance.”

Following the operation, the young man remained in hospital under observation for two days before he was discharged on Thursday, 23rd September.

He revealed that in addition to fearing for his own life, he was also worried for his wife, who is pregnant with twins, and how she would take the news.
