A 41-year-old man has been shot dead after a video of him apparently snogging his partner’s six-year-old daughter went viral and caused outrage.
The alleged murder took place in the victim’s home in the town of Itaquirai in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The incriminating video showing Rosinaldo de Andrade Messias apparently kissing the minor on the lips and smiling for the camera was filmed on a boat trip on the Parana River on Sunday, 21st November.
The child’s mother, who confirmed to the police that she was the one who filmed the video, posted it on social media. However, she later took it down on her colleagues’ advice, according to the news portal G1.
However, it was not taken down in time to prevent it from going viral, and it reached the police, who opened an investigation on 23rd November and actioned the child services.
Police chief Eduardo Lucena said: “We got the man’s address and went after those involved. We questioned him, and he admitted the kiss, but claimed he didn’t abuse the child. As he was not caught in the act, he was questioned and released to return home.
“Still on Tuesday, after the questioning, we filed a request for his preventive detention. However, he was killed that night.”
According to Lucena, the man had been in a relationship with the girl’s mother for just over four months.
The girl, along with her sister and her mother’s sister, who are also children, were taken in by the child services. They will remain under the care of the state until a court decision is reached regarding their future.
The girl’s mother is being investigated for involvement in the alleged child abuse. However, she is currently denying having noticed the kiss despite having apparently filmed it.
The police currently have two suspects on their radar regarding the fatal shooting. However, their names and relationship to the victim have not been disclosed.
Investigations are ongoing.
