These images show a car which has been skewered from front to back by a crash barrier after the motorist fell asleep at the wheel and remarkably escaped with only minor injuries.

The pictures released by traffic police in the city of Nanning, capital city of China’s southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, show the silver saloon written off on the Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway on 16th February.

Driver Mr Zheng is said to have fallen asleep at the wheel due to fatigue and veered to the side of the motorway, crashing into the metal barrier which impaled his car down the centre.

The dramatic images show the crash barrier having skewered the vehicle right through the engine and front windscreen.

Mr Zheng’s rear windscreen and boot lid are also missing as the barrier exited the back of the car, travelling straight down the centre, the pictures show.

The motorist was found trapped in the driver’s seat of his mangled car, pinned to his seat by the crash barrier.

Rescuers freed Mr Zheng and found that he had incredibly escaped the accident suffering only minor injuries.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, but it was unclear when he was discharged.

Mr Zheng’s car has been towed and investigations into the crash are ongoing.
