Kursat – known to friends as Chico – has filled four trucks with pet food and is also loading a 40 tonne lorry with supplies for people.

The human aid package will include 4,000 warm blankets, 2,000 hot-water bottles, and tonnes of food.

Chico said: “I could have cried when I saw the images of the destruction and the dead on TV.

“It’s terrible what’s happening right now. It’s quite clear that the people down there now need more support.”

Chico’s pal Abdul Amzugh, 42, said: “Chico was very affected by the events in his old homeland.

“That’s why the 40-ton truck with relief supplies should start in the next few days, if possible.”

The lorries with the pet food owners are also expected to set off in the next few days.

It emerged that Chico visited the quake-hit region last month when he bought an almond plantation.

He said: “The hotels we stayed in are all gone. This is insane.”
