Long-Eared Owl Found Injured In Turkish Garden

This long-eared owl has been found injured in a garden in Turkey and is now being treated a specialist centre.

The owl ended up in a residential garden in the town of Yazikonak in the Turkish province of Elazig.

The homeowner said the large bird was unable to fly out of his garden so he called the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks for help.

The long-eared owl (Asio otus) was then taken to the veterinary facilities at Firat University for treatment.

Veterinarian Prof. Dr Mehmet Cengiz Han said: “They are not that common here, this is the first time a long-eared owl has been seen here.

“The owl had a minor injury. From our examinations, we saw that it did not suffer any serious wounds or fractures.

“The bird is very healthy and we will return it to the wild soon.”

He added: “They aren’t normally as big as this one. It’s the first time such a long-eared owl has been seen in the area.

“It has been great to have it here, and the fact it is healthy makes us happy too.

“They should be able to live freely without being shot by poachers or becoming extinct in their own environment.”
