This is the moment enterprising locals take advantage of a flooded street to make some extra cash as they offer piggybacks across the deluge to pedestrians in return for a fee.

The incident was filmed on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza Street in the central Mexican capital Mexico City and shared on Twitter where it has been widely circulated.

Reports said that the group of go-getters was taking advantage of the heavy rains and flash floods that affected the capital city and charged citizens 5 MXN (0.2 GBP) to cross a road that was half a metre under water.

In the footage, the group of men are seen giving piggyback rides to a queue of people hoping to keep their shoes dry.

While several group members carry the customers, one man in a blue T-shirt is seen organising the queue.

Reports said many city streets were flooded while public transport was seriously affected by the adverse weather conditions.

The Secretariat of Public Security sent teams to troubled areas and helped motorists make their way to safe spots in the city.

Council workers and firefighters also had to deal with the overflowing sewer system which was reportedly pouring onto the streets.

Netizen ‘Manuel47799395’ said: “Taking advantage of Mexico City’s misery. Brilliant!”

‘HelenaLuna’ commented: “This is what we experience every rainy season. It is ridiculous the authorities keep creating projects for the most privileged spots of Mexico City while all the other areas lack basic infrastructure for its citizens.”
