Locals Flee As Cargo Ship Crashes Into Shanghai Waterfront

This is the moment a cargo ship crashes into the front of a Chinese city waterfront in front of fleeing residents and causes damage to over 80 feet of wall and railing.

The Zhuo Hang 6 cargo ship crashed into the riverside waterfront in the district of Xuhui in the Chinese city of Shanghai at 8.18pm on 22nd September.

The incident caused damage to around 25 metres (82 feet) of the waterfront wall and railing, however no leakage was found on the vessel and no one was injured during the crash, according to local reports.

The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration said the ship crashed while passing the Longhua Bend due to tidal influence.

Following a preliminary investigation, the local authorities said the ship entered the Longhua Bend at low tide which led to it losing drag force and crashing into the Xuhui riverside waterfront.

The Huangpu Maritime Department sent two patrol boats to the scene on the Huangpu River following the incident.

Local media said it was the third time a ship had crashed into the Shanghai waterfront, adding that crew error and harsh conditions are the two main causes for the accidents.

The authorities explained that the water in the waterfront flows in all directions whether the tide is high or low which often leads to collisions in the area.

The investigation is ongoing.
