This little lad was crushed to death in his own playground when chunks of masonry fell off the house wall and dropped on top of him.
The two-year-old boy was tragically killed in front of his mother while he was playing in the garden of his house when he was crushed under the stone facade that fell from the wall of the property.
The youngster, identified as Furkan Akmese, was playing in the garden of his parents’ house in the district of Bodrum in the south-western Turkish province of Mugla on Saturday (1st January), when the tragedy happened.
His mother Kiymet Akmese was watching her son play in the garden and was unable to do anything as the mass of rubble dropped onto the toddler right in front of her.
Some of the stones also dropped into a neighbour’s garden while two people were sitting outside, but they were saved because they were under a pergola at the time.
But the child was not so lucky and was found to be critically injured as he was pulled from under the stones by his mother and her neighbours and quickly taken to a private hospital in the district.
He could not be saved despite the doctors’ best efforts. His body was buried in Gumusluk Karakaya Cemetery yesterday (2nd January).
The boy’s relatives have claimed that the stone facade was badly made and contravened construction rules, and they have accused the general contractor, name not disclosed, of negligence and of having caused the boy’s death.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated and will determine if charges are due against the contractor or anyone else for the tragedy.
