Cousins Elaine Marques, 17, and Ketelhem Arno Ribeiro, 16, were buried by rubble following the landslide in Camboriu, Santa Catarina state, early on 20th December.

They were in a room in Ketelhem’s family home at the time and tragically lost their lives.

Astonishingly, a nine-year-old girl who was with the teenagers at the time was rescued alive.

She was hospitalised with injuries but was sent home later the same day.

Ketelhem’s parents and her younger brother, aged three, were also in the home but were uninjured.

The tragedy happened when the landslide sent houses and a tree crashing into the family home.

One of the girls was killed instantly. The other survived long enough to receive CPR but died around 40 minutes later.

The landslide was caused by the heavy rains that have been battering Santa Catarina since 19th December.

The adverse weather has caused flooding, left houses and cars submerged, and caused the closure of motorways.
