Footage of the drama was obtained by Newsflash from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), which shared it on 18th February.

The incident reportedly began when deputies received a call about an axe-wielding suspect on the 2100 block of South Santa Fe Avenue, in the city of Compton, in the US state of California on 3rd November, 2022.

The LASD said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The informant indicated a Hispanic male was in the business swinging an axe attempting to harm patrons.

“Further information on the call indicated the suspect was last seen walking north from the business with the axe still in his hand.”

Deputies began searching the area for the man, later identified as Ramiro Lozano, 46, and found him running at the Compton Towne Center Plaza with the hatchet, previously described as an axe, in hand.

They followed Lozano in their patrol vehicles all the way to the front entrance of a business, where a patron was reportedly going out the front door.

Body-worn footage shows one of the deputies exiting the patrol car and ordering Lozano to stop.

But as Lozano continues running away from them, the deputy fires off multiple rounds from his firearm, striking the runner.

Lozano reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to his torso.

Deputies rendered first aid to Lozano until paramedics arrived.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No other injuries have been reported.

The hatchet was recovered at the scene, the LASD said.

The employee involved in the deputy-involved shooting was later identified as Deputy Adonay Molina.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
