This footage shows a bighearted passerby securing himself to a railing and scaling down the side of a bridge to rescue a trapped cat that had been stuck on a ledge for two days.

The incident was filmed on a bridge over the Griboyedov Canal in the north-western Russian city of Saint Petersburg and the footage was widely shared on social media.

According to local media, the cat became stuck on the bridge two days previously, but volunteers were unable to rescue it because it refused to come out of a narrow nook.

The scared feline reportedly retreated behind sandbags and rescuers could not reach it.

According to reports, the cat was finally rescued by kind resident Peter Veliky who was filmed by his wife.

In the footage, Veliky is seen securing himself to railings with rope before venturing over the side of the bridge.

The brave volunteer then lowers himself onto the ledge where the cat is trapped.

He gently pats the cat before grabbing its scruff and lifting it up to his wife who is seen cuddling the frightened feline.

Reports said that the rescued cat is doing well and will soon go up for adoption.
