A 10-year-old girl has been stabbed to death fighting off a convicted rapist who had been released from prison just two days earlier.

Victim Maria Camila Plazas was stabbed four times in the back in the horrific attack at her home in Pitalito, Colombia, on 27th January.
Police named the suspect as Jonathan Francisco Garcia Tapias, 27, who had broken into the family home.
Maria’s grandmother, Luz Marina Valderrama Luna, 67, was also injured trying to fight off Garcia Tapias.
Neighbours rushed the pair to San Antonio Hospital in Huila where Maria died from multiple injuries.
Her grandmother is reported to be in a serious condition.

Police later found Garcia Tapias in hiding. He was remanded in custody.
Police say he had been free for just two days after serving a jail sentence for an earlier rape.
Huila Police chief Colonel Gustavo Adolfo Camargo said: “In the operation, we managed to capture the alleged perpetrator, who a few days ago had been released from jail where he was serving a sentence for rape.
“Thanks to the swift reaction from the police, the alleged murderer was located under a bridge where he was trying to hide to avoid his imminent capture .”
Natalia Luna, Maria’s cousin, said: “They took an angel, they took an innocent life.”
It is currently unclear why Garcia Tapias was released from prison on 25th January.

Locals organised a solidarity march on Saturday, 28th January, to show their support for the girl’s family.
