A man has died after he was attacked by a swarm of killer bees when he stood on a hive in a public park without realising what it was.

Victim Michael Leonardo Picirillo, 34, had been chatting with a friend and his nine-year-old son Leonardo while they were strolling through a park in their hometown of Ibate in the Brazilian state of Sao Paolo.

Local media reported that he accidentally stepped on a small box and was attacked immediately by the swarm.

Horrified Picirillo was stung more than 50 times before he could fight off the angry swarm.

Medics at the local Municipal Hospital treated his stings and sent him home.

But just two hours later, Picirillo rushed back to the clinic with agonising chest pains and later died from a heart attack.

A spokesman for the city council’s health department said: “Mr Picirillo was in a stable condition when being discharged. He was taken to the emergency unit after suffering cardiac arrest.

“Medical staff tried in vain to resuscitate him for over an hour.”

Picirillo underwent several tests and received drugs before being sent home by doctors after his first visit, the city council official added.
