Kazakh President Slams Soft Punishment For Drunk Man Who Vandalised Lift

This is the moment a drunk man smashes a monitor in a lift, leading to the President of Kazakhstan to slam the soft punishment he received.

During a meeting with citizens in the Presidential Palace in the Republic of Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, 68, spoke about the growing cases of hooliganism and vandalism in the country, referring to a recent case in which a drunk man caused damage to a public lift in a plush residential complex in Astana.

The CCTV footage, which was shared on social media to help find the suspect, shows two young men entering a lift.

At one point, the man dressed in a black T-shirt notices a monitor on the wall and smashes it.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the man was drunk while committing the act of hooliganism, and was subsequently fined 23.6 GBP.

The Kazakh president, who was outraged by the apparently light punishment the man received, said: “A few days ago in the capital, a drunk man broke a monitor in a lift and received a fine of only KZT 14,000 (GBP 23.6) for this.

“This will not work. For such acts, you need a prison term of at least 15 days or even a one-year sentence of correctional labour. You need ‘zero tolerance’ in such cases.

“Disproportionately mild punishments, and in fact impunity, will give rise to a further increase in offences and crimes. Therefore, it is necessary to tighten the legislation in this regard.”
