Sulejman Muric, 61, and his new girlfriend Sedina Mocevic, 45, were sleeping when the house went up in flames in the village of Besnik, near the town of Rozaje in north-eastern Montenegro.

Police later arrested Mr Muric’s former wife, Safija Muric, 55, for allegedly starting the fire after breaking into the house, where she once lived, in the middle of the night.

She is accused of climbing in through the bathroom window, spilling petrol inside the property and then setting it alight before making her escape.

Firefighters later found the badly burned bodies of the couple still in their beds. They say the fire started in the living room.

Muric reportedly confessed to police that she had set the house on fire but claimed she did not know anyone was inside at the time.

But she admitted she could not stand the thought her husband was living with another woman in the home they had made together.

However, Muric is now reportedly full of remorse as her former husband was the father of her six children who are now all grown up.

She divorced her husband eight years ago because she said he was violent towards her and had been reported for domestic abuse.

Muric has been detained in custody for 72 hours while the police investigation continues.

She faces at least ten years behind bars if she is convicted of starting the fire that claimed the lives of her ex-husband and his girlfriend.
