A woman is under investigation for pouring flammable liquid over her ex-boyfriend and his new partner and setting them ablaze in the street, leading to them being hospitalised in a serious condition.

The incident took place Lisandro Moyano Street in the city of Las Heras in the western Argentine province of Mendoza on Tuesday.

Fernando Rojas, 25, and his girlfriend Karen Montenegro, 26, were disembarking a bus when the man’s ex, identified as Yanina Belen Diez, allegedly confronted the couple after waiting for them.

She is accused of pouring flammable liquid over the couple and setting them alight before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses called the emergency services and the burned victims were taken to the Luis Carlos Lagomaggiore Hospital.

According to reports, Rojas is in a stable condition in hospital while his girlfriend is in intensive care with 50 percent burns to her body, mainly around her head, back, and chest.

The prosecutor heading the investigation, Claudia Rios, has issued an arrest warrant against Belen Diez.

Montenegro’s sister Caterina told the newspaper Todo Noticias: “Karen is in a serious condition. What this woman did was crazy, she set them on fire.”

She added that she saw her sister frantically running around ablaze, screaming for help.

Caterina claimed that the suspect “threatened Karen on Facebook, saying she was going to kill her, but my sister did not see it as important until this happened.”

The investigation is ongoing.
