A 19-year-old man has been arrested for killing his teenage fiancee with a blow to the head before setting her body on fire while still alive.

The dead body of Roberta Siragusa, 17, was found in a ravine in a rural part of the Italian commune of Caccamo on 24th January, the morning after the night of her murder.

A post mortem carried out on her body revealed she had been knocked unconscious by a blow to the head and then set on fire while still alive, according to reports.

The grim details of the teenage girl’s death came on the day of her funeral at the Santissima Annunziata Church in Caccamo on 4th January.

Pietro Morreale, 19, is currently being held in preventive detention in the psychiatric ward of the maximum-security Pagliarelli Prison in the city of Palermo under 24-hour surveillance.

He originally told the police that Roberta set herself on fire and jumped into the ravine, but his version of events foundered when traces of blood were found in his Fiat Punto, according to local media.

Investigators believe Pietro killed Roberta out of jealousy, and they are currently trying to ascertain if he acted alone or had help from an accomplice, possibly a family member.

Caccamo mayor Nicasio di Cola condemned the killing, stating: “Enough femicide. Enough violence against women.”

The investigation is ongoing.
