One of the Russian international footballers jailed for assaulting a government official has been revealed as the latest signing for one of the country’s biggest clubs.

Midfielder Pavel Mamayev, 31, was released from prison on 17th September along with fellow Russian international Alexander Kokorin after serving just six months in the slammer after a parole court decided to set them free.

The pair were originally jailed earlier this year – along with Kokorin’s younger brother Cyril – for a string of violent attacks that shocked Russia, according to local media.

And Mamayev has now been officially unveiled as the latest signing for Russian Premier League side Rostov.

A statement from the club revealed the midfielder has signed a two-year contract with the option to sign for a further year and he will be paid around 1-million-EUR (887,334 GBP) per year including bonuses.

Mamayev attended Rostov’s recent 3-0 victory over Dynamo Moscow and they currently sit in third in the Russian Premier League standings. Reports state that the midfielder came close to signing for Dynamo Moscow.

Rostov head coach Valery Karpin reportedly called Mamaev, as did Dynamo representatives, on the day he was released but Mamayev eventually chose Rostov as talks with Moscow were suspended.

Korkorin’s contract with Zenit St Petersburg expired during the summer and representatives from the club have told local media that the striker could potentially return to the club.
