Inter Milan have confirmed right-back Danilo D’Ambrosio fractured a toe in his right foot on his competitive international debut but played the remaining 80 minutes of the match.
Inter defender D’Ambrosio, 31, started Italy’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Greece in the Olympic Stadium located in the Italian capital Rome, the defender’s first competitive minutes for his nation.
It is unclear how the Inter defender picked up the injury but in the 10th minute of the match, play was stopped as D’Ambrosio was seen lying on the pitch.
He received medical attention but returned to the match two minutes later. Local media report Italian boss Roberto Mancini was going to substitute him but D’Ambrosio refused and not only returned to the pitch but finished the match.
Inter Milan have now released a statement saying: “X-ray tests for Danilo D’Ambrosio after the incident in the 2020 Eurocup Qualifiers between Italy and Greece. The Inter defender has suffered a fracture on the fourth toe of his right foot.”
The statement goes on to say he was checked out by the club’s medical staff after he was seen visibly limping.
Inter went on to state the player will receive another medical check-up next week, however the club gave no clear timeline on the player’s return.
Local media report D’Ambrosio will miss Inter’s next league match against Sassuolo. The player’s injury could reportedly also keep him off the pitch for Inter’s key Champions League group stage match against Borussia Dortmund.
Italy won the match beating Greece 2-0 with goals coming from Jorge Luiz Filho (Jorginho) and Federico Bernardeschi and have since played Liechtenstein, winning with a resounding 5-0 result in Liechtenstein.
D’Ambrosio made his senior international debut for Italy in March 2017 as a substitute in a 2–1 friendly away win against the Netherlands.
He made his first start for Italy in a loss to France in a friendly in 2018.
