This is the moment an Italian teenager plays his guitar from a terrace above a deserted Piazza Navona – one of Rome’s most iconic tourist sports.

Guitarist Jacopo Mastrangelo, 18, was filmed by his dad performing Deborah’s Theme (Once Upon a Time in America) by Ennio Morricone from his terrace overlooking the square in the Italian capital.

In the video, the sounds of church bells can be heard ringing before the teenager starts his performance.

He strums out the guitar classic standing on his terrace looking out over the deserted square, with Italian flag flying in front of him. The end of the performance is greeted with applause from neighbours.

Local media report the young guitarist and his father choose a different song to perform on the terrace at 7 pm every day.

Jacopo told local media “I had a fantastic feeling, my whole body was shaking. An empty square is even worse than a full square.”

He also commented that his daily performance is the right thing to do, adding: ““We are in a moment in which the only thing fair to be done is to stay at home, I feel I want to do something else, to give hope to people.

“Doing this gesture means a lot to me. A lot of people thanked me with applause and those people made me understand that they understood the message I wanted to send.

“It is a difficult situation, but I hope that we can all resist and get through everything, especially for young people like me, it is complicated”.

Once Upon a Time in America is a film directed by Sergio Leone, and stars Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern and Joe Pesci, among others actors.

Ennio Morricone is seen as one of the most important composers of soundtracks in history.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Italy has registered 105,792 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 12,428 deaths, and 15,729 recovered.
