They had jumped over the central reservation when two of them were hit by a car travelling in the direction of Malaga.

The unnamed motorist reportedly tested negative for alcohol and drugs following the incident.

One of the tourists, identified as 31-year-old Irishman J.B.T., died in the accident while a friend is being treated for serious injuries at the Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella, according to Diario Sur.

The Dublin residents were staying at a hotel in Marbella after arriving in the Spanish resort on Saturday, just over 24 hours before the fatal accident.

Diario Sur said the tourists had visited areas along the Costa del Sol before deciding to go out for drinks, which is when the accident took place.

It is unclear if the police are investigating the incident.

The report added that another tourist was killed trying to cross the A-7 Motorway several weeks ago.

The unnamed pedestrian, whose named and nationality was not disclosed, was hit by a lorry around 10 miles from where the Irish tourist was killed.
