An Iranian cleric has advised people to avoid ‘un-Islamic’ Western medicine to protect themselves from coronavirus and told them to instead eat onions and put an essential oil up their bum.
Ayatollah Tabrizian, who hails from the city of Qom in the northern Iranian province of the same name, suggested to his followers that the anal administration oil – reportedly violet leaf oil, which is an essential oil – is a sure-fire way of protecting oneself from COVID-19 (coronavirus), according to local media.
In a social media post for his 120,000 followers, the cleric, who is a purveyor of traditional Islamic medicine, described Western methods as “un-Islamic” while putting forward a list of techniques to keep the killer virus at bay.
According to local media, who published a screenshot of the Islamic cleric’s message, consuming large amounts of brown sugar, onions and apple will help protect residents from COVID-19.
Meanwhile, inhaling snuff and burning wild rue is also effective, according to Tabrizian.
His eighth suggestion in the list was to pour some violet leaf oil on cotton before inserting it up one’s anus.
According to local media, the cleric believes the essential oil has life-enhancing properties, such as the power to increase brain mass and help cure cognitive conditions such as Down syndrome.
The city of Qom attracts millions of pilgrims and boasts a seminary which hosts large numbers of foreign students every year, according to reports.
The area is currently affected by COVID-19 cases and the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called the sharp increase in cases in Iran “deeply concerning”.
Earlier this week, Iran’s deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi tested positive for the virus.
Reports said that 16 Iranian citizens have been killed by COVID-19 so far.
