A Brazilian inmate has reportedly strangled his wife to death with a rope during a conjugal visit at the prison he is serving time at for drug trafficking.

The incident took place at Penitentiary I ‘Nestor Canoa’ in the municipality of Mirandopolis in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo on 13th March.

The inmate, named as Wellys Lopes Ribeiro, 35, has reportedly admitted to using a handmade rope to strangle his wife, Patricia Lopes Ribeiro, 31, because he believed he was being betrayed by her.

During a conjugal visit at the prison, the inmate used the handmade rope to strangle his wife to death, according to the news site G1.

The crime was only discovered when the visit came to an end and the inmate himself called the prison guards over to report the woman’s death.

Local media said the victim’s body was held in the inmate’s cell between 1pm and 3pm and that her hair had also been cropped.

According to the police, the convict said he killed his wife because he suspected he was being betrayed by her.

He is serving time for drug trafficking and will now have to answer for femicide.

Meanwhile, the victim’s body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML) to undergo an autopsy.

Her family has been informed of her untimely passing.

The Prison Service Administration Secretariat (SAP) stated that the inmate was isolated and that a full investigation is underway to establish the facts leading up to the incident.
