This is the moment a teen daughter tries to give water to her COVID-infected father – shunned by Indian villagers and left for dead on the ground – as her mother tries to keep her away out of fear of infection.

The incident was filmed in a village in the district of Srikakulam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh during the deadly COVID-19 second wave in the country.

According to the news site NDTV, the 50-year-old father, who worked in the city of Vijayawada, returned to his home village after testing positive for the virus, however, he was refused entry and had to stay in a hut outside near the fields.

The video shows his 17-year-old daughter crying and fighting off her mother just to give bottled water to the semi-conscious man as he lies on the ground.

The mother was reportedly frightened that the teen girl would contract the novel coronavirus.

The cameraperson explains that there are no hospital beds to treat the man as the teen girl is finally allowed to pour some water into her 50-year-old father’s mouth.

According to NDTV, the father died shortly afterwards and his family also tested positive for the virus.

The video highlighted the stigma attached to coronavirus infections in rural communities and even among families in India.
