IN THE GUTTER: Young Woman Tumbles Into Sewage Drain And Drowns

A young woman has drowned after tumbling into an open sewage drain prompting outrage and accusations of negligence from officials in charge of repairs and maintenance.

The young woman’s grieving mother is said to have screamed at officials, including the Governor of Latakia, because of the negligence that claimed her daughter’s life, according to local media.

The 25-year-old woman has been named as Nada Daoud and she reportedly fell into the sewage drain along with her mother.

Her mother, who has not been named, was able to escape and her father went on to retrieve Nada, but he was too late to save her and she drowned.

The incident took place in the city of Lattakia, in Syria, and has caused widespread outrage among Syrian communities there, who accused the authorities of leaving the sewage grate open and failing to carry out infrastructure repairs.

It is understood that the young woman fell into an open, submerged crater measuring about 15 metres (49 feet) in length.

The father, who has not been named, reportedly entered the crater and pulled her out after she became stuck at a pipe junction.

Passers-by and the local authorities also tried to rescue her but it was to no avail and she was retrieved from the water lifeless.

People in Egypt have taken to social media to call for repairs to be made for those responsible to be held to account for negligence.
