These are the new LED-illuminated face masks, available in seven colours and four different patterns, set to take Japan by storm.

Developed by the company Global-DC based in the Japanese capital Tokyo, the Lightup! Mask has reportedly smashed its goal on the Japanese crowdfunding site Makuake in just a few days.

Face masks were already considered a part of daily life in many parts of Japan before the COVID-19 pandemic and the funky new Lightup! Mask is going down a storm.

The product comes with a controller that also acts as a USB charger and the masks stay illuminated for up to three hours on a single charge.

The Lightup! Mask also appears like any other ordinary face mask if the wearer decides not to use the LED option.

The mask, which comes with one replaceable filter, is reportedly available in seven colours and four different patterns and the lights can flash, remain constant or change between colours.

Japanese netizens cannot wait for the masks to hit the shops and online comments include “I’m looking forward to getting one of these”, “it’s an interesting idea as masks become more commonplace”, “I’ve been waiting for something like this”, and “the world is so dark with coronavirus, it’s nice to have a bright product”.
