A suspected thief on the run after a car robbery has been arrested after reportedly calling the cops to ask for a taxi because he was lost.

The bizarre incident took place after a 78-year-old pensioner in Mouss in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in northwestern France was robbed by a gang of four in surgical masks.

The gang reportedly shoved the victim to steal her purse before robbing her Renault Twingo which they crashed three kilometres away, according to local media.

The pensioner, who was not injured in the attack, alerted the gendarmerie police force and a search team including a canine unit and helicopter was sent to look through the forested area for the criminals.

Three suspects were found in a vehicle in Noyal-sur-Vilaine in the same department.
after having been picked up by an alleged accomplice and they were arrested.

The fourth member of the gang remained at large until police received a strange call from a man asking for a taxi because he was lost.

The officers were suspicious and officers went to the scene and arrested the man on suspicion of being the fourth robber.

He joined his companions in police custody, according to media reports.

It is unclear why the man asked the police for a taxi.
